EAST MACHIAS — A giant gorilla was kidnapped in broad daylight Sunday from in front of Sandy’s Sales on Route 1.

No ransom demand had come from the kidnappers as of Tuesday, but the Maine State Police are investigating and have put out an all-points bulletin on the primate — an 8-foot mechanical ape.

The gorilla has been a favorite local attraction at the year-round flea market store, and owner Lowell Miller, 79, wants it back, no questions asked.

It was last seen standing with its hand on the sign in front of Sandy’s Sales. Miller did not know it was missing until he started to close up on Sunday. He thought his clerk had wheeled it inside, and the clerk thought Miller had.

“None of us saw him take it,” Miller said Tuesday.

Miller was surprised the gorilla was missing because of its weight.

“That had a platform in the bottom made out of cement. I had to wheel it out with the wheels on it. Then inside it had motors in it, and you plugged it in and the arms went up and down and it turned sideways,” he said.

“Who the would ever steal a gorilla as heavy as that thing was?” Miller said Tuesday.

Miller believes the gorilla may be hiding in a teenager’s bedroom, and police suspect it may be holed up in some college students’ apartment.

“I don’t know if it is exactly at the college,” Sgt. Jeff Ingemi of the Maine State Police said Tuesday. “I think that it is more likely at a college apartment.”

Miller said he has owned the gorilla for about 10 years. He said it was valued at around $1,500.

Miller’s gorilla is a rubbernecker’s delight as motorists pass by the store.

“It is noticeable,” Miller said. “How many people have a gorilla outside?”

This is not the first time the gorilla has run into trouble, but it’s the first time it has turned up missing.

One time, Miller said, a customer ran into it in the store’s parking lot.

“He went downtown drinking and telling everybody, ‘Hey, I just ran over Sandy’s monkey,’” Miller said.

It cost Miller $75 to have the gorilla repaired that time.

Miller said he wasn’t interested in having anyone arrested, he just wants his mechanical primate to come home.

Anyone with information may call the Maine State Police at 800-432-7381.

Which one is considered "better" than the other? Which has a better reputation? Any help would be appreciated.

UMass Amherst is considered by some to be a stronger university, academically and in terms of competitiveness of admissions. UMass Amherst also ranks higher on most rankings tables than does University of Vermont – but not by much. UMass Amherst is certainly better known, internationally.

I'd say, in reality, it's a dead heat in terms of reputation within the US. Maybe UMass has a slight edge, but both are quality universities.

Which do you think fits you better? Which offers more of what you want? Which do you like better? Because when it comes to two unis that are so close in terms of prestige, other factors come into the decision.

Also think about what you hope to major in. UMass Amherst has some very well ranked programs in some fields (business, etc.) while UVM has well ranked programs in other fields. That's something you can look into, if you'd like.

i was just wondering cuz i’m planning 2 maybe go there 4 college and u don’t have 2 but mileage from college to resort would b good and average time traveled by car would also be helpful… pretty much any information will b helpful. thank you!!

First off, you’re passing a lot of good resorts on your way to the bird. That being said, plan on 2 hours – 2:15 depending on traffic and weather. There will be days when you can make it in under 2 hours but then again there will be days (powder days) when I-15 will suck and it will be closer to 2:30. Always give yourself plenty of time on pow days because little cottonwood can get busy and sometimes it’s even might be closed for the first few hours of the morning while they do avie work.

no, SEROLOGY.

It looks like USC does…

I really want to be a zoologist and Unity seems great. but they only minor in zoology so I figured I could major in wildlife and minor in zoology. I’m apparently more confused about this subject than I thought and I am having trouble figuring things out. I don’t want to be limited to certain things such ecology and what not. I want to be a general zoologist so I can study everything in the world, from marine animals and avians. Can anyone help me?

Hi Nicolette. I’m actually a professor at Unity!

You’re right, we don’t have a zoology major. The reality is that it matters very little what the words on your diploma say. What matters is what courses you take and the experiences you have (like in helping out with professors’ research, doing your own research project, or doing an internship).

Getting a degree in Wildlife, Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Conservation, Ecology, Environmental Biology, or Marine Biology would all prepare you for future work in Zoology. You can use your electives (credits that aren’t pre-determined for general education or the major program) to take additional zoology courses to supplement whatever degree program you choose.

If you look at the job advertisements that go out from places like Dept. of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, etc., they say they want people with degrees in Wildlife, Biology, Ecology, Zoology, or related field. So the name doesn’t matter.

The other thing to keep in mind is that many of the jobs where you would be “studying” animals will require you to have at least a Master’s Degree. So, getting a solid life science foundation as an undergraduate is the most important thing to help prepare you for a couple years of graduate school.

Finally, just a little more info to consider . . . One thing that employers have said they like about most Unity grads is that they are ready and willing to work. Because we spend a lot of time on projects that require initiative and learning techniques, students generally learn the kind of work ethic needed in these field science careers.

Good luck making your decision!

He has won one national championship at Kentucky; but Rick Pitino recruited that team.

Tubby Smith can not attract white blue-chip players. He is also not able to recruit players who can play in the SEC.

His teams do not fit the Kentucky mold. His style of coaching would be better accepted at South Carolina State or University of Georgia where good is acceptable. At a college like Kentucky, he is coaching way out of his league.

This seems to be one of those sociology questions that causes much pause. Yes, Tubby will be dismissed as the Kentucky head basketball coach. In reality, he marred himself when he decided his own son would be a major part of winning the national championship with the Pitino players. He almost botched that one championship; his son was really a second-rate player. This created a void. Many players were suspicious of the Kentucky coaching staff. I do know Kentucky lost potential players from the father-son debacle. This is typical Tubby legacy. He blew it!!!

The questioner is obviously not a racist; he is obviously not white. But he did not ask the question about white or black players. He pointed out that Tubby did not expand and make white players part of the Kentucky basketball family. I will remind everyone that the national championship team did have a lot of white players that beat all black teams. As for me, I wish Tubby the best; he will be a good coach at a second-rate basketball school. He has obviously put his own neck into the noose. Good luck Tubby.
