HPU has several advantages:

1. It's cheaper for out-of-town residents, and a higher percentage of freshmen receive financial aid, and the average financial aid dollar amount is higher than for UH – this is not surprising since private schools tend to be more generous. But if you're an in-state resident, UH Manoa is so much cheaper that you'd have to get a huge grant from HPU for the tuition amounts to be comparable.
2. The entrance requirements are less rigorous (lower GPA and SAT requirement), so it's easier to get in

Then again, so does UH:

1. Larger student body, so more diversity and more social life
2. Lower student-teacher ratio, so more personal attention in class
3. UH offers a wide variety of degree programs, and also has graduate degrees in law, architecture, nursing, and business, among others. UH Manoa has the only accredited law and medical schools in Hawaii. UH also has many campuses so if you want to transfer, it's not difficult.

It's really a personal decision that boils down to (1) your choice of major, (2) your personal preferences, and (3) the amount of financial aid you can get from both institutions. Like others have said, if you have a major in mind, it may be better to choose your college based on which of the two has the superior program for your major. But keep in mind that many people – including myself – change their minds about their majors along the way, so just because one school doesn't have the BEST program for your hoped-for major, don't disqualify it immediately. However, if you know that it has a horrible program for your major, then I'd suggest cutting it out of the running.

As far as your personal preferences, that speaks to how much of a social life you want to have on campus. I'm NOT saying that HPU doesn't have a social life; I'm just saying that there are more opportunities to meet more people and a thriving social life at Manoa just 'cause it's way bigger. So this should help you choose.

As I mentioned earlier, cost is always an issue. For in-state residents (which you probably are since you have 808 in your screen name), Manoa tends to be cheaper even taking into account the fact that more freshmen receive financial aid from HPU, and the average freshman receives a higher $ amount of financial aid at HPU. But who knows? If you have great SAT scores and a great GPA, you're not going to be limited by cost. I'd apply to both and see what kind of financial package you can expect to receive before making a decision.

1. Does it get cold in the winter months?
Not really. It rarely gets below 75 during the day. When the temperature gets below 60 at night, it makes the tv news.

2. What is the time difference from the continental United States?
From the west coast, we are 3 hours behind in the summer & 2 hours in the winter.

3. What are the people like?
Generally, I find the people to have a lot of genuine Aloha Spirit. If you are open minded, tolerant, respectful of the aina (land) & the culture, & not acting like everything is so much better wherever you came from, you should fit in OK. However, there is a minority of people (mostly lower income, lower education level) who resent Caucasian people & blame them for their own difficulties. There are historical reasons that justify this, to a limited extent. But it’s no fun when you are blamed for things that happened generations ago, when your great grandparents were living in say, Sweden.

4. How hot does it get in the summer, or year round?
It get into the high 90’s in the summer & fall. Usually, there are trade winds which make the heat more tolerable. When we have Kona weather & it gets humid, it can be uncomfortable. But it’s nowhere as bad as the east coast in July or August.

5. What is the biggest city in Hawaii?
Honolulu is really the only place in Hawaii that feels like a city. Hilo is the next largest & it feels more like a town.

6. What colleges are in Hawaii, and what kind of courses do they have?
The University of Hawaii has 4 year programs in Honolulu, west Oahu, & Hilo & community colleges on Oahu (Kapiolani, Honolulu, & Leeward & Windward), the Big Island, Kauai & Maui. There are a couple of private universities in Honolulu: Chaminade & Hawaii Pacific University. They offer a wide variety of courses of study.

7. Is the beach nice?
The beaches are incredible.

8. How long does it take to fly from California (San Francisco, let’s say) to Hawaii?
About 5 hours depending on whether you have a head wind or a tail wind.

Can you also include what things I shouldn’t bring?
(I’m going overseas so somethings may be impossible to carry on a plane)

Even though things do cost more here in Hawaii, I would recommend you purchase here. Shipping is also expensive, so it is doubtful that you would actually save any money by bringing things from home. We have Walmarts & most of the other stores that you are familiar with. You don’t say if you are dorming, or will be renting a place here. That will make a big difference in what you will need. If you are going to be in a dorm, most kids like to have their own small tv, a laptop, a mini-fridge, & maybe a microwave. The school will have information on what appliances are allowed & if there are any size restrictions. If you will be renting, some places that cater to students around the university may be pretty much walk in ready (ie. provide pots & pans, dishes, etc.). Others could be totaly unfurnished. So until you know more about your situation, it is hard to know exactly what you will need. Just wait & buy stuff here.

It really depends on what you are interested in. All three schools are good, and your reasons for going to college should help you decide which one is the best for you.

1. What is your interested major? I graduated from the University of Hawai`i at Manoa and I loved it there. I majored in International Business and Marketing, with a minor in Japanese. The business program is awesome, and so are engineering, sciences, hawaiian studies, dental hygiene, teaching, travel industry management, and nursing. However, I heard that UH Hilo has a good marine science program.

2. What can you afford? UH Hilo is a little cheaper than UH Manoa, I believe, and both are cheaper that HPU because HPU is a private school.

3. What type of location are you interested in? HPU is close to town/city area… UH Manoa is a little farther away but it's still close. UH Hilo is in the boonies, or in other words, it's not city-like at all. Do you like to go shopping more or go to the beach more or both?

4. What scene are you looking for? If you are looking for a dorming/party scene, I dont believe HPU has that experience as much because the classes are all in town and there are no dorms that are close. UH Manoa and UH Hilo both have dorms that are on campus.

5. Athletics? HPU's sports are not as fun to go to as UH… and UH Manoa's football games are always fun.

So I guess it depends on what you are interested in…

And by the way… I know that I mentioned UH Manoa more but that is because I went there. I'm not trying to sway you to go there. You should do some research to see what matches your interests. The Princeton Review is a good website to do research.

I don't think there's any shortage of people with 4-year degrees in business in Hawaii. We do have shortages of doctors, nurses, dentists, dental hygeinists, elementary and special education teachers, speech and language pathologists, and school psychologists. However, those shortages are created because the pay does not compare favorably with North American wages and salaries when adjusted for the cost of living.
