I’m going overseas for college (I live in Chicago and I’m going to college in Hawaii) What should I bring?
If someone can give me and exact check list of things I should bring (What types of school supplies, aplliances, room and board things, etc) then that would be awesome!
Can you also include what things I shouldn’t bring?
(I’m going overseas so somethings may be impossible to carry on a plane)
Even though things do cost more here in Hawaii, I would recommend you purchase here. Shipping is also expensive, so it is doubtful that you would actually save any money by bringing things from home. We have Walmarts & most of the other stores that you are familiar with. You don’t say if you are dorming, or will be renting a place here. That will make a big difference in what you will need. If you are going to be in a dorm, most kids like to have their own small tv, a laptop, a mini-fridge, & maybe a microwave. The school will have information on what appliances are allowed & if there are any size restrictions. If you will be renting, some places that cater to students around the university may be pretty much walk in ready (ie. provide pots & pans, dishes, etc.). Others could be totaly unfurnished. So until you know more about your situation, it is hard to know exactly what you will need. Just wait & buy stuff here.

Hawaii is not in the stone age . . . You can pretty much get all that stuff at UH or where ever you are going to go to college. If you have a laptop, bring your laptop.

Sent my kids off to college recently
Bring:
Sandals/slippers
Toothbrush
Blinkie
Light sweaters
Every pair of shorts and T-shirt you own
Don’t bring
Gasoline
Explosive
Incendiary devices
Narcotics
Rabies
If you need more info, send an email. I can make better recommendations if I know the living situation. I would sell anything you don’t need and bring light clothes, basically.

1. Bring your basic living stuff i.e. clothing, personal items, etc.
2. You won’t need a coat and snow boots but you will need a jacket. It can get cool at night and if you hike/camp in the mountains it can be Chicago cold.
3. Although you don’t really need long sleeve shirts, it would be wise to have a couple.
4. Shorts, swim wear you can get cheap now in Chicago where as the price won’t drop in Hawaii for those items.
5. Clothing that breaths with natural fibers is more comfortable in the humidity.
6. Maybe a favorite pot/pan
7. Honolulu has a few K-Marts, Wal-Mart, Costco, thrift stores, etc. Basically anything you need to set up you can buy cheaper in Hawaii than paying for shipping from Chicago.
8. Tv’s, furniture, appliances, supplies, etc. can be found locally. We bought (and sold) most of ours at yard sales and swap meets. Military and students are always coming and going.
Over all you only need to bring what you personally need such as clothes, personal items, etc. You really can find anything you need here at decent prices if you shop around and stay out of the tourist areas. Where you stay may change your needs also such as dorm room vs an unfurnished apartment, on your own or roommates?

Frankly you can buy anything you need once you get there.
I went to UH in Hilo and I just went to either Costco or Walmart to buy my school supplies – it’s not like in the middle of nowhere.
However, you may want to bring some nice clothes , summer stuff etc…Granted you can go shopping once you get here but really some stores and brands that you love are only carried back home.
It is expensive to ship stuff back if you ever move back home ot the mainland so you don’t want to bring anything huge or expensive. I bought down there and then got rid of everything once I moved back.

First of all, Hawaii is a US state just as Illinois is. We became the 50th US state in 1959 so you are NOT going overseas!
As far as stuff you should bring with you, I would suggest you only bring the sentimental stuff from home that you cannot live without, anything else can be purchased once you get here (or if you can’t find it, your parents can put it in a flat rate box and send it to you).
Good luck!
