Hi i was wondering i was looking at colleges to go to and University of Utah caught my eye , just because of?
Snowboarding, my parents say that if i go there, the normans will try to convert me into there religion, see im catholic and i don't want no trouble my parents say they'll let me go to any other state college except for this one but i don't know, can you tell me if there telling me the truth or not
Used to work with a guy from Salt Lake who when to University of Utah. Judging from what he told me, BYU (not surprisingly) has a strongly Morman culture. University of Utah, on the other hand, is a secular university that happens to exist in a city where a lot of Mormans live.
So yes, there will be a strong Morman influence there. But yes, you can almost certainly go there and remain Catholic. And most likely be pretty comfortable there.
And yes, Solitude and Alta are particularly nice. Love to ski there again!

Oh noes! Not the Normans!

They have universities in Colorado, too…=0)
You will meet a lot of mormons if you go there but they wont stalk you and spit on you if you refuse to become mormon.
It sounds like your mom needs a little more exposure to the rest of the world.

You wouldn't be the only Catholic at the University of Utah.
About half of the student body is Mormon at the University of Utah. That's a big chunk, but that means that half of your classmates wouldn't be Mormon too. So it's not like you would be surrounded by Mormons and that's it.
And yes, the skiing and snowboarding is pretty good.

As University of Utah Alum and a resident of Utah let me just say Utah State is much better than U of U, but thats my personal opinion. As for mormons…I have lived here 19 years and in that 19 years:
1. No one has ever tried to convert me, or even looked down on me for believing something different
2. I've never had a missionary at my door
3. I have never felt in any way disrespected by anyone who is mormon.
4. I have made some amazing LDS friends who are always there for me when I need them to be and they are completely non-judgemental
U of U is a very liberal school. There is not a whole lot of LDS activity on their campus. There are still mormons there but not in the concentrations that you are invisioning. The chance that the mormons will try to convert you is 0%. I do not know where people are getting these stories. Mormons are genuinly nice people and sometimes their niceness is construed wrong.
Tell you parents that it is ultimately your decision to make and that Salt Lake City has a very active catholic culture. We have a gorgeous cathedral (Cathedral of the Madeline) that is free and open to the public and does beautiful mass.
There is simply no truth to their argument. Mormons will never EVER pester you to join. They might invite you to some ward BBQ's or something but it is always out of kindness and you are always welcome to decline and they will not care. They are some of the nicest people I have known and I feel sorry for anyone who has gotten the wrong message.
Also: if you do end up attending and are looking for great boarding on a budget, Brighton and Solitude are less expensive than the resorts and actually get more snow because they are on the other side of the mountain from the big resorts(Park City, Deer Valley, canyons) Sadly, Alta doesn't allow snowboarding.
